2 excerpted from http://fcit.coedu.usf.edu/holocaust/RESOURCE/GALLERY/DRAN.HTM:

History of the camp: The camp at Drancy was a transit camp not far outside of Paris. In 1939 the camp was used to hold refugees from the fascist regime in Spain. In 1940 these refugees were given over to the Nazis. In 1941 the French police, under the authority of the Nazi regime, conducted raids throughout France that imprisoned French Jews. Many victims of these raids were taken to Drancy. Approximately 3000 prisoners died in French camps from lack of medical care, unsanitary conditions, and starvation. On the nights of the 16th and 17th of July, 1942 the Great Raid of the "Vel d'Hiv" occurred. The Velodrome d'Hiver was a stadium in Paris built for bike racing. During this police operation, which was organized by the Petain government and the Nazi occupation administration, over 12,800 men, women and children (3031 men, 5802 women, and 4051 children) were taken to the velodrome and kept there for 5 days without food or medical care and then transferred to Drancy. The children were immediately separated from their parents upon arrival, and the parents were then sent to the gas chambers at Auschwitz. Oftentimes, the children remained for weeks in Drancy without care or sufficient food. Many died, particularly babies and the very young, because of lack of care and the brutality of the guards. Eventually they were all transported to Auschwitz and gassed. Over 6,000 Jewish children from France were imprisoned and transported to Nazi extermination camps to their deaths between July 17th and September 30, 1942.

12 They had a sister who was born in Russia. Bubby told me she died from the 'evil eye". The story goes that the village "witch" told Edith what a beautiful little girl she had and the little girl died shortly after. I've been trying to remember her name. I'm sure Bubby wasn't even born then.

20 Hello to all of my newly found relatives. Thank you Scott for all your hard work in putting this together. My Bubby (Rebecca) & Zayda (Harry) had 4 daughters and 10 grandchildren. We grew up a very close family always spending all the holidays together. My grandparents had a rooming house in Atlantic City and my immediate family (mom - Adele, dad - Fred, my 2 brothers - Jay & Ed and myself as well as my Aunt Terry, Uncle Seymour, and cousins Ellen and Claudia would rent out our houses for the summer and all pile into my grandparent's basement apartment. Those were some of the best times of my life. Zayda past away when I was 6 years old so I don't have alot of memories of him. Claudia can fill in alot of information about him. My Bubby was a wonderful hardworking woman. All 10 of her grandchildren loved spending time with her.

22 According to Marlene Clearfield Plotkin, Max's granddaughter: His wife Edith died early in 1932. He never remarried. He was a very kind and loving man. He was quiet. Marlene used to sit on his lap while he read the Jewish newspaper (in Yiddish). Zayde let Marlene comb his white hair. He was a tailor. He used to help his daughter Esther make gefilte fish. He used to chop the fish in a big wooden bowl with a metal chopping knife. He lived a year or two with Esther, her husband, and their 3 daughters in a two bedroom row-house at 510 Winton Street in South Philly. In good health, until his death at the age of 84, he died of a presumed heart attack while eating breakfast. Max was of average height and medium build. Max Beckerman
